Riverdale vs Oakland

Riverdale senior Brandon Constant calls quarterback Cody West a big brother.

Big brother played big-time Friday night.

Battered and bruised thanks to a night of hard hits that left many players walking off the field limping, West did what he's shown he does best this season.

He sucked it up, forgot about the pain and played football.

Throw out every stat you can Friday night and look at what Cody West did. It's at that point where you find why Riverdale is back in the state championship picture.

West is a winner this year — plain and simple. Oakland hit him hard. The Patriots made him leave the field for a couple of plays.

But he came back to lead the Warriors for the game-winning score.

Now, it's too early to start predicting what Riverdale will do in next Friday's Class 6A state championship game at Maryville. The Rebels, a perennial powerhouse in Class 4A for years, bumped up to 6A this season and played has played with the big boys.

Their 35-14 win over Knoxville Farragut on Friday night showed Maryville will be a tough opponent.

Crowd saw a classic

There is no official attendance count yet for Friday night's playoff version of the Battle of the 'Boro. The early estimate from a Riverdale official was more than 7,000.

It was standing room only, with rows of fans stuck watching from behind the fences.

Those that went saw a classic — even better than Riverdale's 13-10 regular-season overtime win at Oakland. But did you expect anything less?

These two teams have been two of the area's dominant teams through much of the second half of the season. Their playoff runs have been nothing short of amazing.

But only one team could win Friday night, and it was Riverdale's night as the Warriors showed for a second time that its front line could handle Oakland's vaunted front line.

Now, will a large crowd travel to Maryville on the day after Thanksgiving? Riverdale has been known for traveling in the postseason to support its football team.

Week to be thankful

All season long, players talk about practicing on Thanksgiving Day. It means so much — beyond the obvious that their team is still alive.

It means your team is one of four remaining in your class. It means that your team has come together and done the right things to be successful.

So Riverdale's players may get shorted a little this week in their turkey consumption.

I'm sure no one will complain. After all, they've got a game to win against one of the state's top football programs.

Classless
It is classless that Oakland fans or players (like James) come to our website to trash us, especially after getting beat not once but twice by Riverdale in 2009.

The Warriors had a great season. Good luck to Maryville in the Finals.

What was all this talk about how Maryville couldn't play in 6A?...........
Hey Big Chris who cannot spell or type, and Bob who just doesn't have a freaking clue all I want to know was the 6 hour (chartered bus) round trip worth the butt kicking your team got?!?!?! HAHAHAHAH!!!! Come into OUR HOUSE, set up your little tee-pee, put up your flags, acting like you were Florida State, go get a real image, quit trying to copy others! Blount County is where it is at when it comes to Champions and Championships in high school football: 21 total between Maryville and Alcoa fixing to be 23. Come on down here anytime you want to learn how to play football!!!!! I guess you guys will talk smack again!!! That was the most lopsided win for Maryville this year! Your boys size did not prove anything other than they are FAT and SLOW!!!! They lack depth, you cannot play fat kids on both sides of the ball for 4 quarters against a team that has speed like Maryville, your 61,79, & 75 were all huffing and puffing by the middle of the 2nd quarter. Buddy Jones had 26 carries for 166 yards! What did your QB have? Not enough!.....

Scared Don't Win
No disrespect intended but dang, get some game film. My boy CW only 1 pick this season. Has time to run and throw. We ain't no soccer school like frgt n Bdn or skinny cc school O Ridge. Maryville best players been gone two years. We know what's up, Mrvl plays scared and scared don't win it at this level. We control clock and game. We 2 points away from perfect season against for real teams. Big Boys going to tomahawk dance at mid field at end of game. Nuff said.

maryville does stand chance
maryville is yes knew to this 6a thing, but we can play with the big boys. they have been undersized all season and still played there hearts out. We may not have as much talent as the other team, but the coaching will play in effect friday night. The maryville defensive backs are some of the best in the state. the DB Lee bristol is looking to set his state record of interceptions. All i know is that this super stud QB better watch out for him. Becasue he will becoming with alot of speed and agility.

Quote from former Riverdale coach Rankin: Alcoa ran for 454 yards on 54 carries and never logged a pass attempt in its 41-24 win over Maryville. "Our offensive line didn't think they (Maryville) could stop us," said Rankin. "They kept telling me to keep running it at them. We did that.

All those years Maryville beats ALCOA until a Riverdale coach takes our style of ball to East Tn. Hillsborough did the same at state last year. Knocked their best player out of the game first play. Maryville's whole team got rattled and quit. Rankin exploited it in Maryville's next game. Beat them physically, mentally. Riverdale will too. Hillsborough coach goes to loosing team Oak Ridge this year and nearly does same thing in first season. Maryville will only get 1-3 possesions per half, our line will dominate them with 400+ yards on the ground. It will be like playing our Freshmen/JV teams which are good on their level but not mentally & physically ready for 6A varsity. Riverdale by 21.

3 Riverdale Players Best In State East West Roster
East West Team Named. From Riverdale: LB, TE & QB/athelete. From Oakland: DE, DT & Coach. From Blackman: DB & DE. From Maryville: nobody.

Everyone knows the top players and coaches are from here and from big schools. This is not our first dance. 10 trips to state in top classification! Maryville 0 in top class. 3 of our 2009 players recognized in unbiased voting as best in state. Our line's avg wt is 290lbs! It's a Man's Game up here in 6A! It's gonna be a blowout. Not bothering to make the long drive to Maryville, will listen on the radio. Waiting to see who we will get for state. That will be the real game that is worth traveling for.smilies/smiley.gif

Maryville Rebels Have No Chance In 6A
Bring on the little 4A Rebels. They dont have a chance against a real 6A team! Warrior QB Cody West said it best "they think they want it more than us, they don't." East TN teams are posers: Bearden has never done anything, OR got nowhere, Farragut always goes belly up in playoffs, always, KDB please, Catholic manhandled by Heritage Hillbillys and who is McMinn Co??? Maryville can't compete with true 6A Riverdale, Blackman, Smyrna or Oakland. Maryville will get exposed and embarrased! This issue will be laid to rest on their home field Friday night. They quit against small school ALCOA, they will get dominated at the line of scrimmage.
